A Computational Account of Basic Level and Typicality Effects

چکیده
Cognitive psychology has uncovered two effects that have altered traditional views of human classification. Basic level effects suggest that humans prefer concepts at a particular level of generality, while typicality effects indicate that some instances of a class are more readily recognized as such than others. This paper describes a model of memory that accounts for basic level effects, typicality effects, and interactions between them. More generally, computer experiments lay the groundwork for a formal unification of basic level and typicality phenomena. 2. Concept Models and Hierarchies Many psychological and AI studies have assumed that concepts are logical summaries of features that are common t*o concept members; instances are classified by insuring a ‘perfect’ match between a concept and the instance. This classical view [Smit81] implicitly treats each instance as ‘equal’, but typicality effects suggest that humans do not treat instances equally. In response, a number of representations have been proposed that reflect the variable importance of concept features [Rosc75]. In particular, probubilistic representations [Smit81] associate a probability or weight with each concept feature.

The Effects of Familiarity and Typicality on Naming Objects and Faces
It is found that when we name an object or a face, we often use basic level name (e.g., dog) rather than a name at superordinate level (e.g., animal) or subordinate level (e.g., Labrador). In addition, although abundant evidence generally suggested that both familiarity and typicality influence object recognition, how each of the two factors involves categorization in terms of naming is not ful...
متن کاملObject Determination Logic Quantification - A System for Natural Language Processing
In this paper we describe a new quantification theory based on the Object Determination Logic(ODL). This theory extends the system of classical quantifiers as a system including the classical and linguistic ones. It takes into account typicality, as a dimension of cognition. This theory represents the background of a computational model in the semantic analysis of natural languages. This paper ...
متن کاملEffects of target typicality on categorical search.
The role of target typicality in a categorical visual search task was investigated by cueing observers with a target name, followed by a five-item target present/absent search array in which the target images were rated in a pretest to be high, medium, or low in typicality with respect to the basic-level target cue. Contrary to previous work, we found that search guidance was better for high-ty...
متن کاملTypicality sharpens category representations in object-selective cortex
The purpose of categorization is to identify generalizable classes of objects whose members can be treated equivalently. Within a category, however, some exemplars are more representative of that concept than others. Despite long-standing behavioral effects, little is known about how typicality influences the neural representation of real-world objects from the same category. Using fMRI, we sho...
متن کاملFrom chair to "chair": a representational shift account of object labeling effects on memory.
What are the consequences of calling things by their names? Six experiments investigated how classifying familiar objects with basic-level names (chairs, tables, and lamps) affected recognition memory. Memory was found to be worse for items that were overtly classified with the category name--as reflected by lower hit rates--compared with items that were not overtly classified. This effect of l...
